What cookies and local storage are
A cookie is a short piece of text a site asks the browser to keep, and it goes back to the server on every visit. Local storage (localStorage) and session storage (sessionStorage) keep similar text, but it stays in the browser: the server receives nothing on its own.
The two kinds of storage differ in time. Session storage is gone when you close the tab. Local storage stays until it expires or until you clear the site data.
The law treats all three the same way, and so does this page: every one of them is in the list below.
Everything the site stores in your browser
- symfo.session
- Session storage. Set by: Symfo. Purpose: keeps you signed in on this tab, with the access token and the token that renews it. Lasts: until you close the tab or sign out.
- symfo_locale
- Cookie. Set by: Symfo. Purpose: remembers the language you picked in the PT/EN switch, so symfo.net opens straight in that language. Written only when you click the switch. Lasts: twelve months.
- symfo:consent
- Local storage. Set by: Symfo. Purpose: remembers that you read the cookie notice, so it does not show on every page. Holds only the notice version and the date. Lasts: twelve months, or until the notice changes.
- symfo-motion-paused
- Local storage. Set by: Symfo. Purpose: remembers that you paused the site animations. Exists only if you use the pause button. Lasts: until you clear the site data in your browser.
- symfo.refund-receipt
- Session storage. Set by: Symfo. Purpose: carries a refund receipt from the subscription screen to the next screen. Exists only right after a refund. Lasts: until you close the tab.
- DataFast
- Session storage, no cookie. Set by: DataFast, the traffic measurement service. Purpose: knows that two pages were seen in the same visit. Lasts: until you close the tab.
Nothing on this list is used for advertising, for building a profile or for following you on other sites.
Traffic measurement
DataFast counts visits to the site: which page was seen, where the visitor came from, country, browser and device type. We use those numbers to learn what people look for and what does not work.
It runs in cookieless mode. Instead of storing an identifier in the browser, the DataFast server computes a code from the IP address, the browser and the site domain, mixed with a secret value that changes every 24 hours. The same visitor on different days becomes different codes, and no long-term profile is built.
Measurement covers every visit and rests on our legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used. You can object by writing to our email, and you can block the DataFast script with a content blocker without losing anything on the site.
DataFast is run by JustShipIt Pte. Ltd., based in Singapore, with infrastructure mostly in the United States. It processes this data on our behalf and does not use it for its own marketing.
Pages run by other companies
Checkout and the subscription portal are Stripe pages, on a Stripe address. They use Stripe cookies to work and to prevent fraud, under the Stripe privacy policy. symfo.net does not load any Stripe script.
Signing in with Google or GitHub takes you to their pages, which have cookies and policies of their own.
Why we do not ask permission for each item
In the European Union, the cookie rule (the ePrivacy Directive) does not require consent for what the service you asked for needs, such as the account session and remembering a choice you made. That covers the Symfo items on the list.
Traffic measurement rests on legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f); LGPD Art. 7, IX). It uses no cookie, does not link visits across days and does not feed advertising. The notice on the site says so, and the Accept button only records that you read it.
In the United States, none of this is a sale or a sharing of personal information under the CCPA/CPRA: there is no cross-context behavioral advertising and nobody receives the data for their own use.
How to control it
- Reopen the notice at any time through the Cookie preferences link in the footer.
- Clear cookies and site data in your browser settings. You are signed out and the notice shows again.
- Close the tab to erase everything in session storage.
- Use a content blocker to stop the DataFast script. The site works the same.
Blocking session storage keeps you from staying signed in. The other items can be blocked without breaking anything.
Changes to this page
When an item joins or leaves the list, we change the date at the top and bump the notice version, so the notice shows again for everyone.
